Shonky: Interview & Exclusive Live Mix

Shonky is Los Angeles bound! After recently completing a three week trip to the states that kicked off in Miami and included stops in San Francisco and Hawaii, Shonky is westward bound once again to join System of Survival for the second installment of CULPRIT Sessions in The City of Angels. We got a chance to check in with him about his new label, with friends Dan Ghenacia and Dyed Soundorom, Ibiza, Kazantip, and more. Since we know you love to read about artists you love and get to check out a set that’s nowhere else online, we’ve included his entire set from Asylum Afterhours (recently named #50 club in the world by DJ Mag) in Hawaii.

You recently spent three weeks touring outside of EU-what were some highlights?  I started with WMC Miami where we had our Apollonia showcase at Treehouse. Apollonia is the new label and DJ’ing trio I have launched with friends Dan Ghenacia and Dyed Soundorom. We played all night long B2B and I was really happy about this one, there was such an unbeatable vibe! I also played the closing party of one of my favourite clubs in the USA, The Electric Pickle, and I was invited to DJ at the Flying Circus party hosted by Audiofly. I also got the chance to play in San Francisco for Housepitality and I ended up in Hawaii for the Asylum after hours. So it’s fair to say I had a blast!

Did you enjoy playing on a live stream for the guys at Asylum? Did it affect your record selection in terms of promos etc or did you just play whatever you wanted?  I really enjoyed it because it gives you even more motivation to seduce the crowd – both the one in front of you and the one watching from behind their computers. It was a really nice party and I had the chance to play a long set, which is not always the case in the USA. Being streamed is of course a great way to promote yourself…even if it means my booker can tune in too and make sure I’m playing my best

How did you enjoy the gig? Was that your first time playing in Hawaii?  It was my first time there and Hawaii surprised me, I think they have a great future in terms of clubbing. I was lucky enough to stay there for a week, eating amazing food, going swimming in lagoons and hanging out with a really cool crew of people. We ended the trip on the Sunday with an after party in front of the ocean.

Why do you think some DJs are against streaming their sets live?  Well it’s different for everybody and I can only really say from my point of view. I think it’s great to be able to bring your music to more people and give people more ways to listen our kind of music, rather than focusing on keeping it exclusive.

How has your experience with launching Apollonia been?

It took more than a year to set up everything but finally I am super happy because everything is working out as we want. DJ’ing as a trio means that Dan, Dyed and I now have more sets together, which is such a great experience playing gigs all around the world with your best friends. Production wise we’ll release our second EP ‘Close To The Edge’ by Dan and myself at the end of April, and my debut EP ‘The Minneapolis Touch’ is continuing to do well with lots of support and nice feedback from the scene.

Was the name inspired in any way by Prince’s side project Apollonia 6?  We are all big fans of the movie Purple Rain and Apollonia was the girlfriend of Prince in this movie, as well as being the lead singer of the band Apollonia 6 which he produced. We were inspired by what Prince defined as the Minneapolis sound – a mixture of black music and white soul, and feel this fits what we try to do from an electronic point of view.

What’s new for the label this summer? Will we be seeing any branded parties on Ibiza and beyond?  As I mentioned our second EP ‘Close To The Edge’, including a remix by The Mole, will be out at the end of April and on digital mid June. Dyed is in the process of finishing his solo EP which is due for release later this year, while I’m also working on some new tracks for another solo EP. The summer is gonna be busy! We have a number of Apollonia showcase parties taking place, the first date being the main room at Fabric London. Super excited for this one, as well as Visionquest vs Apollonia during Sonar Barcelona, and a party at DC10 Ibiza, amongst others around the world…

What festivals are you looking forward to this season?  First up at the end of April I’ll be playing in Tokyo for the Hacienda festival alongside artists like Carl Craig and Nina Kraviz, really can’t wait!

I saw a brief interview with you from Kazantip a while ago, what are your thoughts on playing there and the experience as a whole? Would you like to go back? I went there once and it was good, refreshing and different. The spot is beautiful and people are open to discover a lot of new things. It’s a fresh crowd, I’d love to go back there.

Burning Man this year: are you going?  Unfortunately I’m always in Ibiza at this time of year and usually we celebrate Dyed’s birthday at DC10. But I hope I get to try this experience once in my life!

Beyond playing an awesome party at Culprit Sessions’ skyscraper beach(aka The standard downtown’s rooftop)? What else are you excited to do in Los Angeles?  I love the vibe in LA so I’m going to stay a few days after the gig, get inspired by a different city.  A quick bit of sunbathing and shopping would also make me happy!
